Hi Andrew,.
Thank you for your response. I've got the data currently in an HTML format
so that it is viewable while I work out the bugs in the work*** control.
It's not quite what I was looking for but if it works it may be the solution.
I have Excel on my laptop. I downloaded and executed the owc11.exe, as I
had instructed the viewers of the page, and I still couldn't see the control
even though my Excel copy is licensed. The only time I could see the
spread*** control was on a computer with FP installed. What is an Excel
reader? Is it something the viewer downloads? Would it allow the control to
be seen even though Excel doesn't help? Do you know why I can't see the
control on my laptop? It seems like I'm missing a step. Thanks for your
help.

The user still needs Excel or the excel reader - the pluggin in Fp won't
work without the user having Excel or the reader on their system.
You could simply enter the data in an HTML table format - or enter it in an
excel file and convert the excel table to HTML and import that into the web
and publish it.
That's a very basic solution; otherwise you may need to look at a database
driven solution.

Hello Stefan,
The OM (ofc mgr) is not very computer proficient and only knows Excel.
Unless, I misread some owc documentation the end user can download the
control if they don't have Office and it is read only. Do you know
anything
different? If this is the case, then it works for my purposes. The OM
wants
to do all of the updating and wants his changes shown on the website. He
wants them to call him with their reservations.
The OM stays out on the server checking his email so updating his
work***
on the server shouldn't pose a problem for him. The owc spread***
control
doesn't read XLS files so he'll have to save in HTML format. Because it
can't read XLS files I don't think this is true Excel just a
representation
of a spread*** with limited functionality. This web component is a
feature
in Frontpage.
Do you know of another way to do what I want that doesn't require a lot of
programming? The HTML table I created wasn't pretty and was from the
reference at the beginning of the thread. The KB gave me step by step
instructions and the file was saved as ASP. The spread*** is pretty but
right now it requires cutting and pasting and the OM doesn't know
FrontPage.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Bad concept to use Excel that way
1) Anyone who views the site Must have Excel to use the OWC
2) The OM must update the Excel *** on the web server w/ the site
3) Excel is a single user system
(even though you could use it as a Data source, it is not recommended)
Better way to do it is to use a true Database (Access) and server side
scripting (ASP or ASP.net)

| Hello Gang,
|
| I am writing a website in FrontPage 2002 for my dad's business because
I
| have the most experience, which isn't saying much, and I'm free labor.
It's
| an easy site with no shopping cart and no calculations, just graphics
and
| text. However, his business has cabin rentals and the office manager
wants
| to show availability (read only) on the site (in a restricted area for
the
| members). The OM uses Excel. I'm thinking the owc spread*** control
is
| the way to go with it mirroring the Excel spread*** on the server
that the
| OM will update.
|
| Here is my objective, the OM updates the reservations spread***.
Whenever
| the site is opened it automatically updates the spread*** control
with the
| new data.
|
| Here are my problems. I've tried the import feature on the spread***
| control using an HTML format and I get an empty spread***. Also,
when I
| customize the spread*** control it reverts back to whatever it was.
I
| rename the spreadsheet to 2007 and it becomes sheet1. I resize the
| spread*** to $A$1:$G$53 an it resizes back out to timbucktoo. Am I
missing
| something here? Also, I have to log in six times to see the
spread***
| after I've already logged in to the members area.
|
| Now, back to my programming abilities. I can write in HTML, and read
and
| understand Javascript but not proficient enough to avoid banging my
head on
| my desk :) out of frustration.
|
| So here are my questions:
|
| 1. Can the spread*** control mirror the html or xls file on the
server?
| 2. How do I keep my *** name corrected?
| 3. How do I keep my *** size smaller?
| 4. Can I have multiple sheets like in a workbook?
| 5. Why do I have to keep logging in several times to see my page?
|
| I know one of you smart people likes the reference
| http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=268948. I've tried this
but I
| didn't like the way it looked and it ignored my shaded cells. Once
this is
| in place I want to be hands off with the data.
|
| Thanks in advance.
