Don't confuse the IPVPN connection and the ODBC server connection. Once you are connected to the network, you could just use a standard DSNless connection string to get to the SQL server.
See - http://www.connectionstrings.com/ and http://www.able-consulting.com/ADO_Conn.htm for some same connection strings.
