Re: VFP Updates?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Juan,

I never said Vista was hacker proof, just that it's gotten much better than XP when it comes to protection against malware. It's not just me saying that. Anti-virus companies such as Symantec have said that Vista is the most secure version of Windows yet. The bottom line, Microsoft took the blame for system crashes and malware infections when most of it was the fault of third parties. Microsoft customers asked that something be done about it, so changes were made in response to those requests.

I agree with the companies have over used the registery. In fact that is exactly why there are programs out there to clean it up.

It isn't a MS problem, its a software design problem with company developers that mount up COMs and other added components that they don't and probably won't ever use. They add them to their project installs and then won't need them. Since they are shared components they are left in the registry and never removed with their provided uninstalls, which don't include those files and/or registry entries anyway.

I must agree with you there Craig.

Now on another note. I don't know too much about how real safe Vista is. I have to admit that there are lots of features that make it safer for the non-programmer user, but for hackers or crackers.. nah.. its not that difficult to hack into.

I have had to hack into Vitsta at least 6 times already this year. Not for harmful purpose, but clients of Vista have never created a password saved key in case they loose their password, so they come to me.

Now on yet another note. You have to know what the heck you are doing in order to get in. So again, I agree with Craig, if most Admins would have created users as Standard Users instead of Admins.. the task is much more difficult.

Even tho, Tony, you can run most VFP portable (with all included runtimes and files), the regestry is important to the clean opperation of Windows. Its an address based system. Remember back-in-da-day when Ansi C and Turbo C was out. Back when Windows 3.1 was out. This is where they saw the importance of addressing the system calls and function opperations in order to simultaniously run same apps without conflicting interests among them. This is what gives any OS, including MAC OS what is called (MULTI TASKING). Even Mac keeps a regestry type. Its just transparent to the users. MAC makes the decition for you, Windows allows for flexability. You don't remember too many people talking about setting MAC SERVER policies.. That is becaue like UNIX when you first install it. It comes with pre-set policies. You have to know what you are doing in order to set the ones on a MAC PC.

Again.. I have to agree with Craig on the importance and understanding of the standards created for Windows and its registry.

Juan.
