Craig,
You may be correct in what you are promoting. I have over 1000 users using
my apps installed on servers in separate folders and so far I may just be
lucky but after 12 years of running this way I have had very small problems.
Very easy to backup and I also allow the user to put the app on flash drives
and they can put it into any computer and run the apps off of the flash
drives. I think to many people are afraid that the users will give the apps
to there friends and not purchase them and that is why they are so
protective of the apps and scatter them around and fool with the register. I
have found that if you allow good users to load and unload and save the
folders the way they want to you have very small problems. Anyway I may just
be lucky but I am not about to tell all these users that they can't run the
apps the way they have been.

Install the app into Program Files where it belongs, but put the data
somewhere else, say C:\ProgramData\Your App
or
C:\Program Files\Your App\Data, then change rights to just the data folder
so all users can get to it.
or
Use SQL Server Express
I personally don't like the idea of running an application from the
network. I've seen too many apps installed that way and they're not
configured correctly. Performance suffers. VFP often gets blamed rather
than the configuraton.

Craig,
What are the other options??
If you put the app on a server and other people access it on the local
net what is the other option?

IMO, that's a very bad idea. Program Files folders are protected to stop
malware from attaching itself to your exe. If that happens, your
customers will blame you for their infections. There are other options,
but in the end, you have to decide if it's worth the risk.

Linn,
I found out to install your application in its own folder. I don't
install it in the Program Files folder as you may not get at the data
for everyone. If you install your app in a shared folder for everyone
there is not to many problems as most of my apps run fine on Vista
except for some createobject commands to start up Word and Excel. I had
to find out which op system was running first before I called up the
word and excel programs as I had to change the way I opened up and
viewed them. With Vista they kept coming up on the taskbar instead of
max window.
