I can't speak about 64 bit Vista, but I do have experience with 64 bit XP.
The biggest problem with XP64 bit is the lack of hardware and software
support. I'm reminded very much of the early days of Win2000. Back then it
had the same problem - lack of hardware and software support. 16 bit
software won't run, and some 32 bit apps won't work right. If you don't have
a 64 bit driver for your hardware, it won't work. Period. I have to dual
boot between XP64 and XP32 because of the things I have/do that won't work
with XP64.
Today is the time when we are slowly transistioning to 64 bit software. But
like the transition to 32 bit software, it will take years to make. There
isn't enough 64 bit support yet for XP/Vista 64 to become mainstream.
I built a new computer and put XP on it instead of Vista. I have a copy of
Vista, but I have no reason to use it. XP does what I need.

XP's life is being extended because the marketplace is refusing Vista.
There is no place for 32-bit Vi$ta at all! I don't know about 64-bit
Vi$ta, but ...
