Sorry, I was not as clear as I could have been; do the OS installation and
image the drive before it's messy.
But you're right about the service packs, you end up needing to reapply
those that were released since the image was made whenver you restore. You
can restore, apply the service pack and then reimage.
If you're sticking with the CD installation method, "slipstreaming" is your
friend here, there are many sites with guides and so on, here is an example:
