first of all, if the UPS is failing, REPLACE IT. a UPS that
doesn't work reliably when power fails or is flaky is simply a
boat anchor!

second, replace the damn ancient computers with reliable hardware
running XP, which is far more crashproof than windoze 98.

attempting to upgrade the software without fixing the underlying
hardware problems is simply the tail wagging the dog.

the unreliability of the existing hardware will cost you more
money (to fix bad data) than it would to buy new reliable
computers.
