For security I had NetBIOS over TCP/IP disabled, and did NOT have WINS
installed. I have since changed both those. I also manually added the
primary WINS address as its own IP.
The reason I believe for this is that when you send an email to an
exchange recipient it polls the AD DB and finds the Exchange Server
attibute as a common name like "SERVER" and then might try to poll it
against WINS. I cannot confirm this, but since I changed it, I haven't
recieved any more random NDR's.
Microsoft (hidden deep in their bowels) officially states that they do
not support any Exchange infrastructures without WINS implimentation.
I only stumbled across this fix when I ran the "Exchange Server Best
Practices Analyzer Tool" availible here:
The tool told me that I did not have a primary or secondary WINS
address and that M$ did not support etc etc.. So I tried playing
aroudn with it. It seems to have fixed it.
Let me know if this helps, or solves your problem as I would be
interested to know!
