Hi Brian,
The reason for this is that the IMS's SMTP address is still valid and
showing up in routing even though the IMS is stopped. If you open up the
winroute.exe utility and look in the middle pane you will see an SMTP
address still there for the IMS. Because it is a 5.5 connector it is always
marked as "UP" and available for routing. If you would like to test but do
not want to completely delete the IMS (which by the way, after replication
would resolve this problem), you can remove the IMS's address space and let
replicate. To do this, in the 5.5 Exchange administrator program go to the
Address Space tab of the IMS, remove the address space entry that is there
after making note of what it is. Then wait for this to replicate to the
active directory. Next look in the Exchange 2000 System Manager. On the
properties of the IMS wait until the address space is gone through
replication, it may take a while to replicate to all DC's as well. Lastly
open up winroute and confirm that the address space is gone for this
connector in the middle pane. Next test, you should notice the message now
go to the default SMTP virtual server.

Subject: New Exchange 2000 Server cannot send outbound mail
Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 10:28:16 -0600
Hello All,
I have a client who is in the process of migrating from a 5.5 server to E2k.
An E2k server was added to their single 5.5 Server site. To test
send/receive functionality of the new server (before committing all
mailboxes to it) the MX records were modified and the IMS on the 5.5 Server
was stopped.
The problem is that NO mail seems to be going out via the Exchange 2000
Server. When the Internet Mail Service is stopped on the 5.5 server no mail
can get out from either 5.5 mailboxes or E2k mailboxes.
Any ideas?
Brian
