Entourage 2004 + exchange 2000 OWA authentication problem error 401

Hello group, We have some problems authenticating from a Mac OS 10.3 to an
Exchange 2000 server using OWA.
since OWA doesn't work, Entourage 2004 neither.

-We get 401 errors in the IIS W3SVC logs

We tried NTLM and basic authentication.
A Proxy is not being used

-When using basic however, we get logon sucess in audit logs on the Exchange
server and still we have 401 errors!

the problem is the same when changing the client browser IE or compatible
browser on the Mac

tried domain\username syntax and username only on auth popups.
