Most company's these days perform reverse lookups to prevent spamming from
fake domains, which means that when setting up exchange for an organization
that's hosting the domain outside of exchange they must use the ISP's or
hosting company's SMTP server which is no big deal, the questions is when I
get a NDR its always coming from the exchange SMTP sever which is weird
because the users outlook is configured to use the Internet Mail as the
default account, so if the e-mail is sent by the hosting company's SMTP how
does exchange SMTP get involved and perhaps causing NDR when the other
party's server performs reverse lookup.

Here are some sample NDR's users receive.

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
 'User (user@domain.net)' on 8/19/2004 11:41 AM
The e-mail address could not be found. Perhaps the recipient moved to a
different e-mail organization, or there was a mistake in the address. Check
the address and try again. <main.Domain.local #5.1.8 smtp;553 5.1.8
<user@domain.local>... Domain of sender address user@domain.local does not
exist>

  user@aol.com on 8/19/2004 11:49 AM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.
Please contact your system administrator.
 <main.domain.local #5.5.0 smtp;550 REQUESTED ACTION NOT TAKEN: DNS FAILURE>
