SMTP / DNS question

There are some items in my SMTP queue that are in Retry
or Ready mode. The reasons for non-delivery are
normally "The Connection Was Dropped By The Remote Host",
or "The Remote Server Did Not Respond To The Connection
Attempt" or a couple of other messages, but those two are
the most common. When I ping the destination domain when
these items are in Retry or Ready mode, the pings produce
a resolution and replies. Their website also comes up
(if they have one). When these items are in Active mode
and a ping is attempted, the name resolves but no replies
are sent. The domain website will not come up.

Any ideas as to why this is?
