I wouldn't do it. If I had to do it, I would find anything I could get my
hands on, bring up a new Exchange server, do all the moves, then
decommission the old box and rebuild it, then move everything back.

Thanks

Should I still follow this when using the same hardware and just
formatting and keeping same name as this seems tailored to new hardware
and same name.

This is my only Exchange server.

Due to a variety of software glitches and hardware issues I need to
rebuild my Exchange server.  By rebuild I mean format and reinstall the
entire OS and Exchange.

The domain is made up of 2 DCs (both 2003 Standard SP2).  Exchange is on
it's own box - a 2003 Standard SP2 box running Exchange 2003 Standard
SP2. There are several other member servers which are not relevant to
this.

Can someone please advise me of the correct sequence to perform so I
don't miss any steps out when flattening and rebuilding the server.

Thanks in advance

I have done loads of re-install / disaster recovery scenarios. Trust
me there is no big deal in it.

Things to keep in mind.
1) Once, you format and re-install the OS - keep the same server name
(if required you can reset the computer account - this would be
important - as this helps in re-joining the computer back to the
domain)
2) Keep same IP Address - subnet.
3) Ensure DNS is updated with this entry.
4) Oh and i forgot please ensure that you have same OS version with
service packs as before.
5) Once, thats done please have ensured that the box has same drives -
since Exchange would place all its information in the same drive
folders as before (incase if it doesn't find that - DR would fail)

-----Al the above points look simple yet important.

6) Once the OS part is taken care of - Install IIS once more.
7) Now royally place the disk and run the disaster recovery switch to
get back things in order.
8) Install service packs as the older box - including fixes.

Once done your good to go.
