Exchange 2003 offers allot of additional spam control features that exchange
2000 does not. When you use those tools combined with some 3rd party
solutions you can dramatically reduce the spam. I would suggest adding
additional spam software or upgrading to exchange 2003. A majority of your
issue is probably spam coming into your domain to address's that don't exist
which of course then produces ndr's which then cannot be delivered becuase
the email sender was invalid. Exchange 2003 has an option to only allow
email to valid active directory exchange enabled users.

I wasn't very clear in my last response. Panda used to have their own
antiSpam engine in their software. Recently they (Panda) opted to abandon
their home-grown engine and incorporate MailShell into their software.
The
only control the administrator has is to set the SPAM filter sensitivity
to
Low, Medium, or Hi and rely on eir filters.
I can't say it has gotten worse or better as this client seems to go
through
spells of hi SPAM content.
The content filter within Panda offers a good capability for setting up
filtering rules, but is not the solution hoped for.

So they switched from Panda to MailShell. Did that make the problem
worse?
You said they use "everything" but what are the details of that. It is
hard
to evaluate the issue not knowing the details of how the antispam
software
is working.

They recently switched to using MailShell for their AntiSPAMM module.
Near
as I can tell from the MailShell site they use everything.

How does the Panda software handle the spam - blacklists, content

The volume of unwanted eMail at a clilent location is getting to
the
point
that management almost wants to change our domain name and start
over
again.
I don't know what part is what is truely called SPAM, and what
part
is
"Other
Junk Mail", but I am hoping to get it stopped (at least mostly).
The mail queue folder just fills up really fast with junk in a
retry
status
(mostly bogus addresses in our domain). The "badmail" folder can
get
10K
files in a matter of days (this for a domain w/ only 25 - 30
valid
users)
The domain (all servers including exchange and the client
systems)
use
Panda
Business Secure which we have been very happy with. It has
never
allowed
a
virus in; does exceptionally well with spyware/adware/malware;
and
until
recently seemed to be doing OK with the SPAM.
The volume of filtered mail and non-deliverable seems to be
adversely
affecting the exchange performance. People say Outlook is not
snappy
anymore. The server is relatively new maybe 30 months, Xeon
processor
w/
1
GB memory.
Is there anything that can be done in exchange?
Should I look at different / other anti-SPAM software to
compliment
the
Panda?
Do add-on appliances such as the Panda Gatedefender do a better
job
than
software?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I just don't want them
to
have
to
change eMail domains unless it becomes the only option. Prior to
my
taking
over the account, the were hijacked by a spammer and had to be
rebuilt
then
to get off the black lists.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
