1. Windows Server 2003 provides Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) feature,
which may cause potential conflict between built-in NTBackup utility and
VSS. According to the backup log, I can see the following errors related to
VSS during NTBackup.


Information Event ID 2001: "lsass (784) Shadow copy 16 freeze started."
Information Event ID 2001: "wins (4088) Shadow copy 16 freeze started."
Information Event ID 2001: "certsrv.exe (140) Shadow copy 16 freeze
started."
Information Event ID 2003: "lsass (784) Shadow copy 16 freeze stopped."
Information Event ID 2003: "wins (4088) Shadow copy 16 freeze stopped."
Information Event ID 2003: "certsrv.exe (140) Shadow copy 16 freeze
stopped."

I suspect the VSS may be the root cause of the issue. And based on a lot of
successfully-resolved cases, the hotfix in KB833167 can fix the potential
conflict between NTBackup and VSS. That's' why I strongly recommended you
installing the hotfix.

2. During using NTBackup utility, you can see not only Exchange Information
Store, but also brick-level files in Windows Explorer. Based on my
knowledge, it is better to separate backup tasks. If you have combined
Exchange backup and other Backup task together, I strongly recommend you to
schedule a separate task to backup Exchange Information Store. And the
brick-level folders and files I listed in previous thread should never be
backup since backup these folders will case Exchange database and IIS
metabase crash. That's I provide the such suggestions before.
