E2k Instant messaging problem

I am trying to set up E2k IM for internal use only on a small, single domain W2k LAN, but it just won't work. It should be a no-brainer, but no matter how I configure it, I keep getting "sign in failed because of a problem connecting to service". I have tried every kind of dns record I could think of and re-created the IM virtual server about 20 times, but to no avail. It's driving me crazy - pleeeeeeeze help!!! What am I doing wrong??
