Hi Grant!
I probably had the exact same problem as you...
I wrote a message in the same newsgroup, but Exchange instead of
Exchange2000... should probably have written it in here instead.
Here is a copy though! :)
Let me know if that fixes your problem!

Hey everybody!
Hope I will be able to help someone out there with what I did to make RPC
HTTP work!!?!
I followed a bunch of different instructions on how to make a Single Server
RPC HTTP work, without any luck at all.
Outlook 2003 will just ask for user name and password, but never be able to
connect...
I have an Exchange Server 2003 Ent. Ed. with SP1. Firewall has these ports
open: 80,443,6001,6002,6004
When I follow this KB article using one difference, it works for me!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833401 (KB833401)
When you are done with everything and you setup Outlook, in the very end,
where it tells you: "Use this authentication when connecting to my proxy
server for Exchange list, click Basic Authentication"
I finally just happened to change "Basic Authentication" to "NTLM
Authentication" AND then it worked!!!!
Not sure why, maybe someone can explain??!
Anybody else out there, who can't make RPC HTTP work?! Did this make any
difference for you?!
Thanks!
