Merger - Sharing a SMTP name space

Hello:
I am going into a merger with another company. My first goal is to have a
new SMTP domain name for everyone. Both organizations have their own AD and
Exchange servers. Due to politics there will not be any connectivity
between the two domains as far as a trust relationship. By using a hosting
service and LDAP queries between the AD servers, I can get inbound e-mail
delivered to the correct Exchange server. But I have not figured out how to
get messages to flow between the two Exchange servers.
Once the merger goes forward users on both domains will have new e-mail
addresses with the new domain name. The new e-mail addresses will be the
default for all users. Obviously each Exchange server will be configured
with the new domain name. The problem I am having is when a user is on one
of the Exchange servers and needs to send e-mail to a users on the other
Exchange server how will it deliver the e-mail. Can this be done with a
special SMTP connector? I am still puzzled on this...
If anyone has any suggestions on this I would greatly appreciate it.
Harrison
