Creating and Sending to External contact issue

Exchange Server 2000, SP3:

Hi, I have setup several external SMTP contacts in AD but cannot send an
email to any of them: .

I CAN email the recipient directly.

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: test

Sent: 11/06/2007 11:58

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Fred Bloggs on 11/06/2007 11:58

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.
Please contact your system administrator.

<XXMAIL1.XXX.pri #5.5.0 smtp;550 Recipient domain must exist>

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks
