When you go to Exchange System Manager, click on you exchange server and properties. Look at the DSACCESS tab. Do you see the servers and their roles.
When you say crashed, does that mean the server died or the SA started spitting errors in the app log but the server still works?
I would also run DCDIAG against both servers now to see what it says.
Check the replication of your site between the two servers.

Hi, we are physically replacing our primary domain controller with a new
w2k server. We've already made this new server a DC with global catalog
enabled. We've also made this new DC a DNS server,a DHCP server. We tested
it and it worked. We then turned off the global catalog check box on our old
PDC. But our exchange2000 then crashed. What did we do wrong here? Are we
missing anything?
Thanks a lot!
Jing
