Ayuh. That's good for backup purposes, but not so good for archiving in
the true sense.


I already sold it to the "hands that signs the checks" and it is a go
ahead. I also know that it will be major $$$$$$ but I just want the
right one. Are you uaing any of these products?

No, I'm not, but some of my best friends are....oh, never mind. :) Try the
m.p.exchange.admin group and ask for real-world experiences with various
products.

Yep....but make sure that you explain to the business owners how
much it will cost to store all this data (wherever it lives), and
how long it takes to do backups & restore times. Perhaps there will
then be a mandate from upon high. You also don't mention whether
you're running E2k Standard or Enterprise, but in Enterprise, you
can have multiple stores/storage groups, which can help a lot.
Also.... could be upgrade time; E2k is out of mainstream support now.

That's a Good Thing. PST files are not in any sense 'manageable' on a
network and are best avoided.

I am looking for a solution --Microsoft or Third party-- where the
emails and attachments are migrated/extracted out of exchange but
are still available for easy access. This migration/extraction
could be to a separate server/storage but with a "stub" in the
InBox that takes the user to the migrated/extracted email(s) and
attachment(s) if they were to double-click on the stub.

This problem is fast growing and is global and every email will face
this sooner or later.

It appears that Microsoft does not have such a solution to handle
this phenomenon. There are third party applications that claims to
do what I described above. Does Microsoft have any particular
recommendation(s) to deal with this problem? Can you "guys", ladies
and gentlemen, recommend something?

There are many enterprise archive solutions out there that will do
what you wish - Symantec (née Veritas), Quest, GFI.....you might
post a request for product reviews & recommendations in
m.p.exchange.admin, which gets a lot more traffic than this group
does.
