pop clients on the LAN works fine, that was my first test,
So from the inside, one of these very same users can use a POP client to
successfully receive mail and relay through your server, via authenticated
relay only (not "IPs allowed to relay") ?
also yes
they can telnet to 25 and get the banner..
From the outside, right?
how about you give the steps you would do to allow outside pop
clients to use your exchange box as a rely
Pretty much the same thing you'd do internally - making sure of course that
your SMTP server accepts connections from all senders, and that the ISP
you're using to get to the Internet isn't blocking your access.
You can take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=153119 if you want
to try bypassing the mail client altogether.

yes
Odd. So I'd just double check:
....Tthe credentials work fine for the POP account, but do not for
the SMTP server?
...And you're 100% sure you've got "allow authenticated users to
relay" set up in your virtual SMTP server settings, and allow
connections on port 25 from anyone outside your LAN
...Can the users even telnet to the SMTP server on port 25 and get
the banner?
Can you reproduce this with a POP client on your LAN?

I would rather configure them as a pop client, and yes they are
setup as SMTP authentication otherwise they get a unable to relay
message
That wasn't really my question, though - I was asking whether you'd
told the mail client to use the *same* credentials when
authenticating to the SMTP server as it used for authenticating to
the POP server.

Dear NG, I need some help and clarification, we have a e2k3 box
hosting our companies email, we've got a number of remote users
that need to use Outlook as a pop client (they never come in the
office and they connect from dynamic IPs),
You might consider using RPC over HTTP for them instead - much
better.
after setting everything up the
pop3 worked fine but the users where unable to authenticate to
the SMTP server, I've setup the SMTP virtual server to allow
relaying for authenticated users, in OE I get a prompt for a
username password and domain, in outlook I get a prompts for a
username and password claiming that the server rejected it,
In Outlook, how did you set up the SMTP server authentication?
You ought to be able to use the same credentials supplied for
POP....
a test I removed integrated
authentication and then OE just prompted for a username and
password not a domain, i was only able to get it to work when I
only checked anonymous access, is this how its supposed to work?
is it safe? can someone please clarify this for me and explain
this all thanks a million
