Re: WINMAIL.DAT

What happens if you disable the virus scanning (all of it) for a couple
minutes and send the attachment?

I am running InoculateIT on the server and the clients. On the server the
email protection is running (scanning incoming and outgoing emails) as
well
as real-time file scanning.

Yes, if I put that image by itself in a PPT the problem arises, as well as
when I PDF that PPT. I have ZIPed, RARed, ACEed, and TARed the file and
it
always happens.

It is a standard Exchange-Outlook connection via Active Directory, no IMAP
or POP3.

And this problem does not happen to external emails...only
internal-to-internal.

1. what antivirus is running on the client?
2. what antivirus is running on the server?
3. is file based antivirus running on the server?
4. if you put that slide in a new ppt does it do the same? if you zip the
ppt does it do the same?

How are the outlook clients connecting to Exchange? MAPI? POP? IMAP?

I have been having a problem for several months now, where emails sent
internally are having their attachments changed to WINMAIL.DAT. These
are
PowerPoint files and Adobe Acrobat PDFs. I have read everything there
is
to
read on the web regarding this problem, and have done everything I can
to
stop this from happening. Switched to plain text, changed settings in
the
System Manager, etc.

There is something else going on, and I can prove it. I got my hands
on
one
of the PowerPoint files that was getting changed to winmail.dat and did
some
testing. This is a 15-slide presentation with several slides showing
images
of chemical structures. After several tests I found something
weird...if
I
removed a specific slide from the presentation and then re-sent the
file
it
DOES NOT change into a winmail.dat file. If I put that slide back in
and
send it...poof, winmail.dat again. If I remove any other slide from
the
presentation it changes to winmail.dat...even if I send the file with
only
that one slide in it.

I am running Exchange 2000 Enterprise on a Windows 2000 Server and the
clients are all Outlook 2000 on W2K.

Anyone have any ideas why this could be happening?
