You should be able to change the alias to whatever you like.

Yep - but note that your recipient policy may override what you set up per
mailbox, unless you set up the mailbox not to be updated by the
policy/policies.

The alias is just a nickname for the mailbox, really. They have to be
unique.

Try the syntax suggested above for the login name and you may not need to
change anything.
