Error during delivery process

Hi,
A client of ours kept on receiving the same message over and over again.
After performing a search using Exchange's "Message Tracking System", it
showed only one instance of the message the client was referring to as being
sent.
3 days later, the user who originally wrote the message received the message
below from our own mail server:
"A copy of your message is being returned to you due to difficulties
encountered while attempting to deliver your mail.
The following errors occurred during message delivery processing:
<smtp client's email adddress 29999>: expired after 3 days, problem was:
write to server: Broken pipe"
My understanding is that the client kept on receiving the message (problably
every 10-15 min.) because our server never received a notification that the
message delivery actually happened... so it kept on trying.
I have done several searches on the web looking for clues as to what the
error message (write to server: Broken pipe) means and could not find
much...
My question is: Was it our server that could not receive the acknowledgment
that the message had indeed been delivered or was it the client's mail
server that was unable to genereate it?
Needless to say that the client was pretty annoyed by this "e-mail circus"!
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Claude
