The smarthost is just another method of delivery.
Sometimes, if you have a dhcp assigned address from your ISP you may
not be able to send to some domains because they see that address as
dynamic and therefore suspect. You can then configure a smarthost so
that all your mail is delivered to the ISP who then forward it on from
a box with a fixed, known valid, IP address.
If you're not having any problems then leave things as they are.
