Yes, even from 5.5 days, the primary reason you separate logs from databases
is performance. Recovery is listed as the secondary reason. To gain the
best performance in Exchange, you must have a dedicated spindle set for each
set of SG logs.

You are right about having all your databases on the same drive - lose it,
and you obviously lose all users. It's all a balancing act with how many
disks you have. If you can split the databases as well, then that's really
good.
