changing authentication/relay

I have changed the relay options on our exchange server,
so that only authenticated users can relay on the server,
as well as changing the authentication from annonymous to
windows authentication & basic text. Since I have done
that, we are unable to receive mail. We have rebooted
server & clients... Changed all of the settings back to
original config, and mail gets delivered.....
Very strange????
