The 4.4.2 error is just as it says-- a timeout. A network trace for these
cases usually shows, "timeout waiting for client input"

>From this KB article that discusses delivery status notifications:

284204 Delivery Status Notifications in Exchange 2000 Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=284204

"- Numerical Code: 4.4.2 Possible Cause: Connection has dropped between
servers. Troubleshooting: This error message can be caused by transient
network issues or servers that are down. The server attempts to deliver
the message for a specific time period, and then generates further
  status reports."

The problem is that the receiving server is not sending a response for some
reason. The 5.5 IMS is waiting for that response and times out waiting for
it. You will need to work with the receiving domain to resolve this issue.
