Hello,

We run Exchange 2000 Standard SP3 on Windows Server 2000
SP4. We're doing some housekeeping and I want to know
which log files are safe to delete vs. which I need to
keep. A consultant told me that I need to keep all the
log files since they're needed in case I ever have to
restore the server from our backup tape. We use Veritas
Backup Exec 8.6 with the Exchange Agent as our backup
software, which backs up the \\server\Microsoft
Information Store\First Storage Group. For some reason we
can't get it to attach to the selection \\server\Microsoft
Excgange Mailboxes. When we try to enable that selection
it asks for a unique mailbox name that belongs to the
Backup Exec Services account. No matter what mailbox or
username we enter it doesn't work.

Anyway, the question is about the log files. On the
Exchange server there are 2 partitions. C: is the System
disk, D: is where the Exchange Program Files are loaded.
M: is the Virtual Mailbox store drive. In the D:\Program
Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA folder there are many E000*.log
files, all dated today, about 5MB each. I'm assuming I
should leave them alone. There are also the res1.log and
res2.log files. I'll leave them alone.

In the D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Logs folder there are
many snd2057A1.log files, all dated from 6 months ago to
about 2 months ago. Can I delete all of them?

There is also the D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\SERVER.log
folder that contains files named 20040225.log through
20040304.log. I'll assume that's the last 7 days of logs
which we tell Exchange to keep for 7 days and then
delete. I'll leave them alone.

  In the D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi.1\BadMail
folder there are many *.bad and *.bdp files dated from 2
months ago until today. Can I delete them?

Finally, in the D:\Temp folder there are 1000's of files
named dlv*.log and snd*.log. Those date from 1 year ago
until today. Can I delete all of them?

Thanks for any help!
Tom
