Hey Everyone-
I have a question about Exchange 2000 and Windows Server 2003 AD that I have
not been able to find a definitive answer to. I have seen this question in a
few forums so a definitive answer will be helpful to a few folks. My
question is: Can I switch from Windows 2000 Native mode to Windows Server
2003 Domain Functional level without breaking/interrupting/other badness my
Exchange 2000 environment? Here is some background on my environment to help
formulate an answer:
-Upgraded from a single Windows 2000 Server Native mode domain to a single
Windows Server 2003 domain.
-Domain and Forest Functional Levels remain at Windows 2000 Native.
-Ran all necessary schema updates prior to upgrade, including the Exchange
Server fixes to avoid the mangled inetOrgPerson schema attributes.
-All DCs are running Windows Server 2003 standard.
-DCs handle all name resolution with AD Integrated DNS and WINS.
-No negative application side-effects were experienced as a result of the
upgrade.
-Exchange 2000 SP3 is in place.
In my search for an answer, I came across the following article:
You Cannot Install Exchange 2000 on a Computer That Is Running Windows
Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321648
Here is an excerpt from the article that almost answers the question. It is
a bit ambiguous though:
***BEGIN Q321648 EXCERPT***
Exchange Server 2003 is the first version of Exchange that is supported on
computers that run Windows Server 2003. You can install the following
versions of Exchange 2000 on a computer that is running Windows 2000 Server
in a mixed Windows Server 2003 Active Directory environment:
• Exchange 2000 SP3 (recommended)
• Exchange 2000 SP2 with the latest Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
post-Service Pack 2 hotfix rollup package (319743)
You can also run these versions of Exchange 2000 in an environment that is
fully based on Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.
The Exchange 2000 version of the Active Directory Connector is not supported
on Windows Server 2003. However, the Exchange 2000 version of the Active
Directory Connector is supported in a mixed-mode domain controller
environment where the domain controllers are running Windows Server 2003.
***END Q321648 EXCERPT***
The key information from that excerpt that I focused on was “You can also
run these versions of Exchange 2000 in an environment that is fully based on
Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.” That implies that Windows Server 2003
Domain Functional Level will work but it isn’t clearly stated. I could
interpret my environment as fully based on Windows Server 2003 AD because all
of my DCs run on 2003, even though they are currently configured in 2000
Native mode. I may be overanalyzing or splitting hairs but the potential
fallout for killing my Exchange 2000 environment makes clarification of this
wording very important to me.
A definitive answer will help me take the final step in the upgrade of my
domain and move me to my next deployment projects with SMS 2003, Exchange
2003, etc. Also, a clarification in the above listed article, or an article
dedicated to answering this question, would be very helpful. Thanks in
advance for all assistance.
