A few months ago a client installed a WIN2K server and Exchange 2K. It
ran without any problems. The Exchange server operates in a separate
domain from the other servers and workstations.
The other day they ran WIndows Update and it is now running WIN2K SP4
and Exchange 2K SP2. The day after the update it began running slowly
and they restarted the server. After the restart normal operations
returned, for a while.
Later in the day MTA and Information Store services stopped running.
They were unable to restart manually. Further research discovered that
the Global Catalog could not be found. They attempted to manually
indicate the global catalog servers and restarted the Exchange server,
but there was no change.
After researching the problem on Microsoft's Web Site, we promoted the
Exchange server to a Global Catalog. After restart normal operations
returned, once again.
My client has asked why after months of normal operations, the Exchange
server would suddenly be unable to locate the Global Catalog.
Any ideas?
