installation of AD connector for 5.5 fails. help!

        ok;

        i'm trying to install the ADC component for Exchange
        server 2003 (i'm under the impression that it's the
        same component as is used with exchange server 2000)
        as part of joining an Exchange 2003 server to an existing
        Exchange 5.5 site. i've tried installing it both on my
        future exchange 2003 server, and on the PDC for the domain.

        the account i'm using has enterprise admin rights, and
        i've also tried installing it under the forest domain
        administrator account. every time i install it, it gets
        almost all the way through the install, and at the last
        step 'configuring registry entries' it fails with error
        ID no: c102798a 'An internal component has failed'.

        These are the last lines of the Active Directory Connector
        install log from the root of the primary drive. It is
        always the same error.
