Your question about permissions got me thinking. My user is an admin,
however, I just realized that apps aren't run with admin privileges by
default anymore. I explicitly forced the setup to run as admin this time and
the installation process was able to start.

I'm trying to install Exchange 2007 SP1 on a Windows Server 2008 SP1
system.
Oringally I started the installation, completed the prerequisites (like
powershell) and selected the components to install. However, the
installation
failed when trying to contact the domain controller.

I believe I have the issue with the DC fixed. However, when I try to run
setup again, it fails immediately with the message "Exchange Server setup
encountered an error."
