Point well taken, but I am in "dire need" because of the planning and
management. To answer you question as to why there are 2 basic reasons:
Mail is disappearing for no reason for people using outlook 2007, when it
gets installed it asks for a cert which isn't the same as the domain name
there's issues with that. (I've tried to ignore that by cancelling the cert
but mail is still disappearing for no reason.) So management believes that we
need to have everything match (Mail domain, website and internal domain).
Which is the second reason, management wants the internal domain name to
match the web site and email address. I've tried to talk them out of this
however I was over-ruled. Now I'm stuck with the mess.
I looked in to renaming the domain however, it seems very risky and not
something I want to "fool around with" I was told via another blog that my
best best would be to migrate. So I'm trying to migrate based upon that
information from another blog.
I have migrated before but not to the same systems. I've migrated from NT -
2000 and 2000 - 2003. I can use ADMT to move the accounts but I need to move
the mail while still having the mail flow? That's the issue. Management is
"hot" on this and won't listen to reason. I'm in the middle of this mess
without many choices. I need to find the safest solution for this problem.
That's why I'm in dire need.

You cant run Exchange 2003 on 2008 server..
In all fairness to Ed, you posted on here like you were in a very dire and
panicked situation. It truly gave the impression you were in deep deep
trouble. Now you say you are not. Obviously a good thing.
So maybe we should back up and we can help you from the start rather that
from the implied position that you were in deep trouble right in the middle.
So, what's the goal here? Why are you undertaking this massive project? Is
there something wrong with the existing domain?

One question if you will... If I migrate to 2008 domain controllers with
2003 member severs on the domain and use exchange 2003 with 2008 installed
as
the server, can I then migrate it?

For the record I did do research and I was told that migration would be a
better option than domain rename. NO it's not to late to "turn back"
because
unlike most people, I don't just jump in blind! I've only set up one new
DC
and One Exchange server. I was only trying to set up the trusts for the
migration. As for the "internet mail, that's not an issue it's a public
IP
and simply get converted to an internal ip by way of a firewall. Exmerge
is
an option but I just may scrap the entire thing until we can upgrade to
2007
exchange.

You have two forests so you have two Exchange organizations. The two
Exchange organizations won't recognize each other as Exchange entities.
You're looking at an interorganizational migration. Had you done your
research, you might have decided that the effort involved in migrating
your
Exchange environment might not be worth the meager benefit of changing
the
AD domain name.
You're looking at something like Exmerge to take the old mail out of
the old
Exchange system and put it in the new one. And you have to switch over
your
Internet mail from the old organization to the new one. This is going
to be
a complicated process, one that you should have planned out in advance
of
migrating your domain, if you haven't done so.
If it's too late to reconsider your strategy, I recommend you hire a
good
consultant to assist you with your effort, and look into a product like
Quest Migration Manager, which will make a lot of this a lot easier for
you,
although at a price.

I'm in dire need... Please help. I need to migrate my current
exchange
server to a new domain I'm moving to a new 2003 domain because I
don't
want
to go through the headache of domain rename. I need to find a way to
move
or
migrate the mail across the domain to the new one.
I can't seem to get the two servers to talk even though I've set up a
trust
relationship. I need to get this done. There has to be some
solution.
Even if I have to use a backup to move the information store I have
to
somehow get the mail on this new box.
Someone please, please point me to something!
