Default email addresses in Exchagne 2003

Hello!
This might be a dumb question so please forgive me if it is...
Lead in:)
We have a domain, place01.place.state.us, the domain was setup years ago when we had email hosted by another company. They are starting to charge us an arm and a leg for service now so we decided to setup our own exchange 2003 server. got everything installed and working, but realized too late that our email domain was different from our Windows Domain, our email domain is just place.state.us (the leading place01. is removed)
Q:)
is there anyway to setup exchange to have the correct addresses with out doing something drastic?
I know I can manually update the SMTP address on each user, but I don't want to do that on all 200-250 people.
let me know if you need more info.
TIA
Drew
