corrupt 2003 to clean 2007??

30 users (5 via WAN), one 2003EE server, mounted & running ok (?), but
backup or defrag results in event 474 (corruption with 1018 error), over
100GB in email (many large CAD attachments). No complaints from users
(yet). To fix event 474 & 705 (w/error 1018), restore or run eseutil or move
mailboxes (?)
Questions:
1) Can I move mailboxes from 2003 to new x64 box 2007 as a way out or must I
fix corruption first? I was planning a move to 2007 anyway, and bpa utility
says I am ready except for schema upgrade.
2) If I go to 2007, can I use one box with a fast quad proc, 8 Gb of ram,
and one big RAID 10 array, or should I really go with mult arrays or mult
boxes? I have seen some whitepapers, but get lost in the details. I
prefer simplicity as a rule if performance is ok. Currently using one scsi
raid 5 array on a 3 year old dual cpu xeon w/4GB, and performance is not
great, but I had some setup issues that I just fixed (eg., reverse dns ck)
per the best practices tool.
Not sure I have a backup I trust, as it looks like I have been getting
backup errors for awhile (yes, my bad). MS warns that eseutil results in
data loss, which sounds bad, and at 4 GB per hour, I would need to pull down
server for a weekend I guess.
One seemingly odd note, I ran one backup of priv*.* and it backed up ok
(using ntbackup), and yet, when I tell it to backup Microsoft Information
Store, backup fails.
Advice?
