I'm not sure I follow that...
say you have a laptop user that goes on the road, he can connect his
laptop to the internet and get his email, but will he see the shared
contacts?
With Sharepoint, I'm not sure. With public folders, you just sync them to
the cache by dragging them into Public Folders\Favorites in his Outlook o
what about a remote user using a webmail interface?
OWA won't show you sharepoint data that I know of. But in E2003 and lower,
PFs show up in OWA. I'm not sure they can be made to do so in E2007.

thank you. i thought from what i have read public folders are being
phased out,
Yeah, they say that, but I've heard rumors that this may not be the
case. In any case it won't be for ages anyway - when are you
planning to upgrade Exchange to the next version? ;-)
so the sharepoint would be the better method?
Might be, yes. Use OL2007 and WSS 3 so you can do two way
syncs/access, not just one-way views in Outlook.
If that is
the case though, can just using WSS the shared contacts be available
when accessing email from outside?
I'm not sure I follow that...

what is the most common or "best" way to have a shared customer
address book with exchange 2007 using different versions of office
on the clients?
A public folder or Sharepoint.
