Re: Raid Config for Ex 2007

The Barracuda feeding a hub transport server is fine. I wouldn't jump into
Edge at this point either as long as the Barracuda is working well for you.

Exchange 2007 is supposed to be a lot lighter on your storage subsystem,
especially if you add a lot of memory. You should be able to have more
storage groups and more mailboxes on the same storage subsytem as before, as
long as you follow Microsoft's memory recommendations.

I agree on the RAID 1+0.

I think the only Microsoft recommendations is that you avoid using a Hub
transport server to be directly internet facing. If it were me I would
proably leverage the existing solution as it is familiar and has no doubt
built a nice heuristical knowledge of your typical email.

Yes. But currently we do have what is effectively an OWA server receiving
mail from the Barracuda, routing it to exchange and also sending outbound
mail. That's all it does, it hosts no mailboxes, OWA, OMA, etc. are turned
off. The Barracuda is only accepting in bound messages. I still need a
solution for outbound. I know MS suggests using an Edge but it seems like
a
big overkill if I'm only using it for outbound messages. I will post a new
thread for this discussion.

You could use it for LCR but the caveat here is that if you are using
LCR,
CCR or SCR then you are limited to a single database per Storage group. A
good artcile on HA

That's why the migrated solution has 9 storage groups/9 databases but I am
concerned about the performance implications of doing that (as opposed to
having, say, 4 larger databases). I'm not experienced enough with larger
RAID
configs to know whether it would perform better having fewer databases or
if,
due to the random read patterns typical of Exchange, whether it would make
any difference at all.

Thanks again for your input.
