Exchange Topology

Okay, so where do I start?

We have a small Win2003 network. We currently collect our email messages
using a basic email program which uses SMTP/POP accessing their mail server.
Our server accessing their mail server has two network cards, so is on our
internal network, and links to the outside world via a broadband connection.

Okay, so in my ignorance I expected to just swap out our existing email
server with a shiney new Exchange one... ho..hum.!

Now many weeks on, and to be honest, totally confused the more I read - I
need someone to point me in the right direction. If someone could give me
some pointers I would really appreciate it.

Some help with getting my head around the following would be helpful:

Do I need my exchange server to have two network cards? If not, then how do
I have it connected to the outside world, and my internal network?

I have read that it is best to publish my Exchange servers IP address on an
external DNS server - how would this work if it sits on my internal network?

As we currently have our mail from outside going to our ISP's mail server -
what is the best way of transferring over to Exchange - Does it have to be
the big bang, or can it be phased in? Basically, as I understand it, once
mail is being redirected (using the external DNS lookup) to my Exchange
servers IP address, then I will no longer be able to use the old system.

When we were testing (messing) we sent a message from the Exchange Server
which is only on our internal network - and it went out to a Yahoo account.
Would it be aware of our existing email server, and sent it via that using
SMTP..?

Basically, I am looking for a knowledgeable person to recommend a sensible
set up, then I can then educate myself on what I need. I really didn't
appreciate how extensive and complicated Exchange Server is.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

Tony
