Re: Exchange 2007 frontend with Exchange 2003 backends

Hi Ed,

I'm back with some infos. The infrastructure was incomplete.
2 - Exchange 2003 backend (A and B)
1 - Exchange 2003 frontend
1 - Exchange 2007 backend
1 - Exchange 2007 frontend

Users who have their mailbox on the 2007 backend can use the 2007 frontend
without problem.
Users who have their mailbox on the 2003 backend can use the 2003 frontend
without problem (this was what we had for a while). this case applies to
users who have a mailbox on backend A and backend B. The frontend is working
fine for 2003 users).
Users who have their mailbox on the 2007 backend cannot use the 2003
frontend (not really a problem. Users get a 404 error when the frontend try
to use the /owa).
Users who have their mailbox on the 2003 backend cannot use the 2007
frontend :
- if using https://frontend2007/exchange , Internet Explorer ask for
credentials then display the OWA 2003 form based authentication (if I
continue, I get "Error not specified").

- Both backend are not using Form Based Auth
- Both backend are not requesting use of SSL
- Exchange 2003 frontend is using FBA + SSL (this has been enabled on
/exchange folder only)
- Exchange 2007 frontend is using FBA (on OWA directory) + SSL.

I guess the problem is probably related to the authentication between the
frontend and the backend (of course :-P). I'm not sure of what I have to
modify. I just modified the /exchange virtual directory on the frontend
(used integrated + basic) to match the settings on the virtual directory of
the backend but it does not work.

JB.

You have a certificate on the back-end server? If you're requiring SSL on
the back-end server, then the front-end server will not work. A front-end
server connects to a back-end server using HTTP, not HTTPS. No
certificate is required on a back-end server.

Hi,

yes, I use the /exchange virtual directory. In fact, when I use the url
https://externalfqdn/exchange, i get a popup. I enter my credentials
(DOMAIN\username and my password). Then, the Exchange 2003 form based
authentication interface is displayed and I have to enter my credentials
a new time. Using the same credentials, I get an HTTP ERROR 500 and the
mailbox is not displayed. I use the same certificate authority for the
certificates on backend and frontend servers. I don't have any host
headers on the servers (I found a KB which explains this can be a
problem). I unchecked the "show friendly http errors" in IE and the HTTP
500 is replaced by "Error not specified".

Are you using the https://servername/exchange URL?

Hi,

we currently use Exchange 2003 (1 FE server, 2 BE servers). I added a
frontend Exchange 2007 and a new backend Exchange 2007 (for hosting the
mailboxes of the first back end server).
I'm unable to use the new frontend Exchange 2007 to open the mailboxes
hosted on the Exchange 2003 backend. Do you have some recommandations
or links about this kind of migration ?

Thanks

JB.
