Well, I was thinking of enabling to do periodic copy to another disk (no
different backup software needed)

same way, I implemented shadow copy of the FILE server drive (windows
storage server) to another volume. MC

There are three components to VSS backups; the writer, the provider, and
the
requestor. The volume shadow copy service is the MS VSS software
provider,
and in and of itself will get you nothing. The VSS writer is built into
exchange 2003 or 2007, but you're missing the VSS requestor, which
coordinates the backup process. Unless you do the snapshot with a
requestor
that is aware of the exchange writer, your backups will not be consistent.
Even then, it's up to the backup application to prune the logs as in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822896/en-us. You can't just back up the
volumes themselves and expect it to work. There's a lot more to it than
that for transactional applications like Exchange or SQL.
