a External SMTP server to accept the external mail. The internal SMTP server
distributes the mail properly but the external SMTP server has the mail

to do to get this external SMTP server to pass mail to the internal side?
The Exchange server does not need to be on the external interface.
disable that NIC and make sure there is a default gateway on the
interal NIC to get mail out that way.
Inbound mail can be port forwarded at the gateway to the internal
address.
