Re: necessary or not?

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Yes, it's not an efficient way to do it (refer to link posted in first response) - depending on your environment of course - e.g. large network, multiple subnets, clusters, et al.

yeah, it'll work - if you can call it that. you'll be depending on computer browsers and broadcasts for netbios name resolution. This solution is bound to be problematic. You'd be far better off using WINS.

Having worked with Ex2003 environments without a WINS server, I'm tempted to say yes, it'll work.

Thanks Bharat,

I'm in a flat domain environment. Literally just one domain and there will never be more (training environment).

In that case, can I *not* use WINS or is it still needed?

Relp!

For Installing Exch2003 in a cluster, docs say, "Make sure that you are running Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). " For a non-clustered installation, it's more vague, saying "MS Docs for Exch2003 say a prereq is, "Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) are configured correctly in your Windows site."

I'm not running WINS, do I need to install and configure it for all servers & clients on the network? Just servers? The documentation doesn't expand on this at all.

I'm installing an exchange server *and* and exchange cluster both (3 machines total -- all virtual -- for a classroom training).

Thanks in advance!
