So how do these sum up:
1 Quad-core 2MB cache per 1.86ghz CPU.
6GB Ram
Or 2 Dual-core 1MB cach per CPU 3.0Ghz
6GB Ram
I'm curious what it is about the DL385 you like. We've only ever used 1U
units (rack size). Especially since we don't have internal hard drives.
The xiotech san was amazing when we got it. The compellant tops it and we
couldn't be happier.
Server builds are a sinch now.

Here's our full design. Sorry for not posting it all in the beginning.
roughly 3000 users per mailbox. we add 400 each year that never leave
average usage is moderate. some heavy users, a lot of light users.
our SAN is Compellant and Xiotech SANs with fibre iscsi drives (tons of disk
space to grow). We boot off the SAN which provides many features and we've
been doing this with our ex2k3 architecture for a while with no issues.
we have 1 internal 36Gb, 10K hard drive per server, to hold the page file
(per msft recommendation).
That's not a recommendation, there is no problem with the page on a
SAN but no matter.
we plan on having roughly 7 storage groups (1 per store).
we planned on having 4gb ram per server. we are not set on whether to have a
single quad-core or 2 dual-core kits. the variables we're not sure how to
handle are CPU speed, CPU L2 Cache and apparently not the amount of ram
either. Our vendor's quotes on 2 2Gb ram chips are virtually the same cost as
4 1Gb chips. so we'd go with 2x2gb. the server's we're looking at are the HP
DL360 series.
DL260 will be pretty good for a SAN connected solution. I'd think
about the DL385 though as it's a better box and there isn't much of a
cost uplift.
we hoped to have 4 total servers for now and install the HUB role on either
front end servers or the backend servers. from another post I think you're
recommending the front-ends (CAS).
I would be happier to have the CAS and HT on the same two boxes with
the MB on its own.
Thanks for your help. I've been reading that blog and studying. These are
the beefiest servers we'd have ever had so I have to be able to justify this
to my boss if I come back with something like this. :-)
Compellent eh? Excellent technology.
