When you install Exchange 2007 we will NOT create replicates. The Jet / Store code that is responsible for creating the store will read from the siteFolderServer object which will be your 2003 server if this is a mixed org to get the system information necessary for stamping this pf. You will need to push replicas of the OAB over there if you expect to have your free/busy or OAB to be published. All Outlook 2007 clients will use the availability service to communicate with the mailbox / calendar for your free/busy data.

For your OAB the Default Offline Address List will be pointing to the Exchange 2003 server and when you try to generate it will fail. All calls go via RPC or XSO to the 2003 server for the rebuild. If you move the OAB to the 2007 server and run update-offlineaddressbook we will force an RPC call to the store to create the root system folder and then the oab generation process will create the oab version 2, 3 and 4 folders (if your default offline address book) specifies them. What you are seeing in most likely the hierarchy. If you are going to have legacy clients you will need to push replicas over before you remove your legacy servers.

I have not configured any Office Address Books, in fact I was messing around
some time ago, but ended up deleting them...yet there are still entries for
the public folders.

I guess my question is, if I do not create any replica's ... from this point
for public folders, what will happen?
