Thanks again Ed. When I attempt to send mail via telnet I get the following
error message from my Exchange server: Error 454 5.7.3 Client does not have
permission to submit mail to this server. THe connection then closes.

That log doesn't tell me anything..
Try connecting to the server yourself. If you can do it from the Ironport,
that would be best, but if it's not a device that supports telnet, then
start with another box that's on the same subnet as the Ironport. Follow
these steps.
Open a command window.
Enter:
TELNET 192.168.1.50 25 [Use the address of your Exchange server]
If you get the banner and prompt from the Exchange server, enter these
commands:
HELO
MAIL FROM:myaddress@xxxxxxxxx [If you use a valid address you might get a
bounce sent to it if you make a mistake]
RCPT TO:your.mailbox@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx [Address of an Exchange mailbox]
DATA
This is a test message.
..
QUIT
Note that before the QUIT enter a period (dot) by itself on a line.
Let us know what happens if you have a problem at any stage. It it works
try it again, except use the hostname instead of the IP address exactly as
you have it configured in the Ironport server. Or don't bother if the
Ironport uses an IP address.

Thanks for your help Ed. I am somewhat new to Exchange and this is the
first
time that I have had to do some serious troubleshooting. I am not
familiar
with interpereting the output from the log. I am pasting a few lines of
the
log for you to review. As some additional info. the log on the Ironport
is
indicating that Exchange is refusing the connection. It is saying that
the
client does not have permission to connect to the exchange server.

I have just deployed a new exchange 2003 server that has mail routed to
it
from an Ironport security appliance. I have a static route to the
exchange
server from the Ironport. I have configured exchange to accept
connections
from the IP of the Ironport and to accept mail from the IP of the
Ironport.
For some reason, the Ironport indicates that the exchange server is off
line
and all mail remains queued for delivery. Is there anything that could
be
blocking the transmissin of mail to this server? I am able to ping the
exchange server from the Ironport so I know that I am communicating
with
the
server. Thanks in advance for your advice.
