AD Connector in mixed mode

I have an exchange server 5.5 on a NT Box, I upgraded the domain to AD,
Mixed mode, there are a few NT Boxes, so I cant move over to native mode
right now, I am working on a swing migration to exchange 2003, when I run
the active directory connector, I get to step 4, and receive a message when
I run the Connection Agreement Wizard, that the "staging area of the domain
is not in native mode. Group membership can not be properly maintained
unless the staging area is in native domain mode". What is the effect of
this, can I upgrade 5.5 to 2003 while operating in mixed mode and what does
this message mean to me.
