Well, since in this scenario, if the onsite Exchange Server is down or gone
you will not be able to move them since the server is not reachable. I
don't want to lead you in the wrong direction, but to do this reliably you
are going to have test it and make sure it does everything you are expecting
in the event of a disaster. This is why I am suggesting some third party
software such Acronis, DoubleTake, Xosoft, if you need real time restoration
of your server. I have worked with each vendors product and they have the
software that will replicate real time your Exchange Server. Yesterday, in
a sales conference call with Acronis, they stated two large companies in
Florida were hit with Hurricance damage to their Exchange Data center.
Within two hours all Exchange Servers were back up an running at an
alternate location. They do cost money, but they are well worth it when a
disaster hits and your *** is on the line to get it working ASAP.

Thanks.. one more thing.
"Otherwise, you can still mount the databases but you
will have reconnect all your user mailboxes."
Can you just "move" the user mailbox within AD?

Yes, but the Servername and Storage Group name need to be the same for
this
to work correctly. Otherwise, you can still mount the databases but you
will have reconnect all your user mailboxes. I addition, you need to
rehome
pf's, OAB, etc. As I stated, if you want to make sure you have an
offsite
recovery server ready to go, you are going to need third party software
to
insure its done properly as I suggested. Another solution, which I am
testing right now, is Acronis Software which ghosts offline images of
your
Exchange. Theses images can then be restored to different hardware if
necessary.

Thanks, but that didn't answer my question. Let me simplify: Can I
mount
backup information a store from one Exchange server on another one in
the
same organization if one of them were to fail?

The third party vendor software should explain the required setup in

I've got 3rd party software to replicate the Exch2003 databases to
an
off-site server... how does this server need to be setup? As an
exact
duplicate of the original or just another excahnge server in the
organization? What will be required to mount the backup stores in an
emergency?

Not without Third Party software or look at Exchange 2007 LCR

Can I set up two exchange boxes, one that acts primary and
replicates
all
changes to a backup exchange server that could come online in the
even
the
primary fails?
