Hi Jim,
Thanks for the information. It was very helpful. How much space should we
allocate for OS vs Logs?
10 each should be fine.
How do I identify the logs that should be moved after the install?
Go to the properties of the Storage Group in Exchange System Manager.
How do I identify the DB files that should be moved to the RAID5?
Go to the properties of the Private and Public Stores in Exchange
System Manager.
You can (should) only move stores using that interface. DOn't try and
move them on your own, use the GUI.
Thanks,
Rogene

Here is what I usually do on servers supporting between 250 and about 750
mailboxes. This is a rough estimate and assumes that you don't have
hundreds of "heavy" users.
C:\ OS, Exchange binaries, Exchange Queues - RAID 1
D:\ Exchange transaction logs - RAID 1
E:\ Exchange databases - RAID 5
The most important thing is to make sure that your transaction logs and your
databases on separate "spindles", not just separate logical disks. This
will help to ensure that recoverability is more likely to work and improves
"write" performance for the transaction logs.
If you are scaling above 750 mailboxes, you might start considering a
separate disk for the Exchange binaries and queue files or a separate server
for front-end services (off loading SSL and inbound SMTP). RAID 0+1 also
gives better read and write performance, but of course, at a cost.
During setup, I install everything to the C:\ drive (default location) and
then move the files later.
I hope this gives you some ideas and answers your questions.

Our existing configuration:
1) AD Server running W2K3
2) W2K3 Server running Exchange 2003 Enterprise
a. 2 x 72GB drives Mirrored
b. 7 x 72GB RAID5
3) 125 Exchange Users with 1GB Space each
Question #1:
I've read that the following should be on separate drives:
1) W2K3
2) Exchange Application Files
3) Exchange DB Files
4) Exchange Transaction Log files
How should this be done and what size should each partition be? Should we
place do the following?
1) Mirrored Drives
a. Install W2K3 on C Drive (14GB)
b. Install Exchange Transaction Log Files on D Drive (18GB)
2) RAID5
a. Install Application files on E Drive (14GB)
b. Install DB Files on F Drive (202GB)
Question #2:
During setup do you have the option to install the three Exchange items
(Application files, DB files, and transaction log files) on different
drives
or are the files relocated after the install is complete? What are the
default locations for each of these items?
Thanks,
Rogene
